Symbolism of the ‘Dock’
Unload, Reload, and Repair:
A ‘dock’ is often defined as a place where ships are 1) unloaded, 2) reloaded, and 3) repaired. We believe that these three processes largely parallel the work that is completed in therapy. In therapy, the client may actively work with the psychologist to ‘unload’ previous painful experiences and detrimental ways of thinking; to ‘reload’ with new coping strategies and healthy thought patterns; and to ‘repair’ (or ‘heal’) oneself to a new level of holistic wellbeing. Just as a ‘dock’ acts as a necessary aspect of a ship’s journey, so too does therapy help individuals to optimally navigate throughout their life.
Rest and Rejuvenation:
The word ‘dock’ may also be used to refer to a ‘charging dock’ - which is used to recharge, re-energise, refuel, or refill. For many individuals, this is precisely what therapy with a caring psychologist offers them - a regular outlet for rest and rejuvenation (or ‘self care’) amongst their busy or tiring schedules.
Connection:
Lastly, at The Healing Dock, we believe that much of the value of therapy comes from the supportive connection (or ‘therapeutic alliance’) that is formed between the client and the psychologist. Ultimately, this third focus aligns with the word ‘dock’ when it is used as a verb for connection (e.g., ‘to dock an item’).
