They were never “just a pet”. . .

Pets are not just companions — but members of the family. The bond between humans and our animal companions is profound and precious. Our furry and feathery friends often hold a special place in our hearts as loyal companions, confidants, and sources of unconditional love.

Navigating the journey of pet-loss grief can be uniquely challenging. We understand the loss of a pet can evoke a range of complex emotions — from deep sadness and overwhelming grief, to feelings of guilt, anger, and even denial.

Pet-loss grief can affect anyone from all walks of life and at any life stage, from children to seniors. The bond between humans and their animal companions transcends age barriers, and the loss of a pet can have a deeply profound impact on every member of the family.

  • Children & Teenagers

For many children, the loss of a beloved pet may be their first encounter with grief, causing confusion, sadness, or guilt. Our psychologist provides support by helping children navigate these emotions in a supportive, age-appropriate manner.

Teenagers dealing with the challenges of adolescence may find pet-loss particularly hard and can feel hesitant to express their grief. At The Healing Dock, we offer a safe space for teenagers to explore their feelings and develop healthy coping mechanisms.

  • Adults

Adults can be deeply affected by the loss of a pet, whilst still having to navigate the demands of everyday life. For many, the passing of a pet can bring up feelings of profound sadness, loneliness, and even depression. We recognise that pet-loss can also bring up unresolved issues from the past, exacerbate existing mental health challenges, and strain relationships with friends and family members. At The Healing Dock, we will work with you to process your grief, identify healthy coping strategies, and find ways to best honour your pet’s memory.

  • Seniors

Seniors — even those who may have experienced pet-loss in the past — can be deeply impacted by the passing of their beloved pet. For many older adults, their pets provide companionship, purpose and routine, and this loss can feel particularly devastating and exacerbate feelings about mortality. We aim to offer compassionate support to seniors as they navigate the complex emotions of grief and loss.
